Use of Electromagnet Electric bell

Electromagnet

It is a magnet made by using electric current. An electromagnet works on the magnetic effect of current.

Use of electromagnet:

  • Electromagnets are used in cranes to pick up cars in scrap yard and also to separate iron from garbage dump.
  • They are also used in loudspeakers, telephones, and in electric motors which are used in electric fans, washing machines, refrigerators, etc. electromagnets are also used in electric bell.
  •  These magnets have their utilization in electric generators where very strong magnetic field is required.
  •  For deflection electron beam of the picture tube of TV,electromagnets are used.
  •  For magnetic separation of iron ores form the earthy substances, electromagnets are used.
  •  For preparing strong permanent magnets, electromagnets are used.
  • Used for separating pieces of iron from wounds.
  • Electromagnet are also used loading furnaces with iron.
  • It is also used in research to study the magnetic properties of a substance in a magnetic field .
  • Electric Bell:

An electric bell has an electromagnet that pulls a strip of iron which makes the hammer hit the gong to ring the bell.

    Construction :

The electric bell has a U shaped electromagnet. There is a small iron bar called armature which is held in front of the poles of the electromagnet. The lower end of iron bar is attached to a flat spring and the flat spring is itself fixed to a metal bracket. The upper end of iron bar has a clapper attach to it. A metal gong is fixed near the clapper.

    Working :

Step 1 . When you push the switch of the bell, an electric current flows through the electromagnet.

Step 2 . The electromagnet attracts the soft iron strip. The hammer attached to the strip then hits the gong, making it ring.
